I would define wellbeing as the state of being happy and realizing your own potential.
According to Ron Gutman, a smile can predict how a person will score in wellbeing. Additionally, smiling predicts longevity and as humans we feel better when we smile. You might be wondering what exactly does it take to reach a state of wellbeing. Basically every aspect of our lives contribute to our wellbeing. I have determined that the following factors contribute to enhancing an individuals wellbeing:
Career- a person’s career should be enjoyable and fulfilling. A career filled with stress and pressure can negatively affect your health and wellbeing. Unemployment can have a huge negative impact on your life in the short and long term.
Relationships- toxic relationships can take a toll on a person emotions. Having supportive relationships tend to lift a person’s spirits.
Exercise- working out helps put you in shape physically and gets you thinking positively. When you look good you tend to feel good as well.
Nutrition- what you eat has an influence on your health and therefore your wellbeing. Eating quality nutritious food help keeps your body healthy.
Cultural and spiritual activities- taking part in cultural and spiritual activities helps you develop your personality and can provide relaxation.
Environment- our outside environment that surrounds us such as the weather can affect our moods. Things that are out of our control such as natural disasters can cause fear, sadness, and shock. It can affect us financially since it will cause increased expenses. Some people even take to substance abuse to cope with such stressful situations.
